a) Tyrimas apie meną (tai dažniausiai menotyrininkai ir filosofai, tyrinėjantys meną);
b) Tyrimas menui (tai dažniausiai menininkų vykdomi praktiniai tyrimai tam, kad sukurtų meno kūrinį (pvz. betono savybių tyrinėjimas);

This collection of articles is the first attempt to discuss artistic research in the Lithuanian context from the viewpoint of both scholars and artists. The classical typology from 1992 by Christopher Frayling, a professor in the Royal College of Art London, defined the relation between art and research as follows:
a) Research on art (mostly made by art historians and philosophers researching art);
b) Research for art (mainly practical research made by artists in order to produce an artwork, e.g. research on the characteristics of concrete or photographic technologies);
c) Research through art (made by artists-researchers within their creative practice that produces new knowledge and experiences).
Essays in this publication represent the first and the third types of relationship. In the first chapter scholars approach artistic research from various standpoints. The second chapter embraces collaborations between artists and scholars. The third chapter consisting of essays by artists and designers (doctoral candidates in arts) seems to be the most unusual in the academic discourse. It reveals a large variety of texts by artist researchers.
